(#Energy, #HeatWave, #Philadelphia)
While listening to the radio today, the news bulletin reported several blackouts in the Philadelphia area due to energy consumption. PECO and other energy companies are requesting limited energy consumption (aka don’t use air-conditioning) during the heat wave.
This leads me to a simple question. If you aren’t supposed to use your air-conditioning unit in 100 degree weather, when the hell are you supposed to? If the energy companies are having a hard time supplying the populous with energy, perhaps it is time to start rethinking energy in the cities.
Expand the tax breaks for solar paneling/roofing and get them installed on as many roof-tops in Philadelphia as possible. I know it is a dirty word in urban areas, but perhaps it is time to rethink nuclear. Also, what about using the dumps as a source of energy (methane can be harvest from the gases released from the ground – 14% of the dumps in the United States are doing this). None of this is going to happen overnight, so it’s time to come up with a plan and act on it.

PS – I am not just going to bitch about this, I will do some more digging on realistic solutions and report back.
